I meet a lot of people and remembering names is something that I claim as important. It must be only a claim because I don’t seem to be doing what I know how to do. I know what to do but I don’t do it. There are a lot of skills that I acquire yet I don’t use them. I read books; I go to seminars all in the quest to be more efficient and effective. For the most part I already know what to do. What I need is more doing. Before I get too hard on myself I must defend my inaction.

I tell myself that I teeter on the brink of overwhelm. Actually I sometimes seek refuge in the safety of overwhelm. If I am too busy, if I am carrying the burden of excess responsibilities how can I be expected to remember all of this stuff. I am going to explore the possibility that overwhelm is a choice not a fact. If it is a choice I have both control and responsibility.

If this path proves out it may be the fastest track to increased skills and increased efficiency. If I already know what to do then I can just start doing it. No learning required, only recall. And If I’m not really overwhelmed then I can choose where I put my energy – high value tasks – and peacefully go about my business. I can do this knowing that what I am doing now is the only thing I should be doing now. What power!
